Dear Friends,
Although the final numbers are not yet in for the parish festival, it looks like we will have made more than $40,000 this year. Thanks once again for all those who did the planning, those who attended, and those who volunteered their time and talent to make it a success.
We are in the midst of Our Catholic Appeal. Our assessment this year is nearly $176,000. We collected $60,000. I am asking each family to join me in pledging. If you do that, we can make our assessment.
Just a reminder that we do have Stations of the Cross each Friday at 6:30 p.m. They are said in English in the church and in Spanish at the outdoor stations.
As Americans we pride ourselves on the value of freedom. We know that what makes America unique among the nations is our ability to be free and yet stay together as one people. We allow diversity of opinion in matters of culture, religion, and how we pursue the goals of life. Yet, we hold to the principle that freedom must be tempered to the common good.
Our belief in the Church is that all human freedom comes from God. God created us as free creatures that can use our will to control our destiny and share in the work of creation. With our freedom we can accomplish justice and when directed to good is the highest human goal.
The Church has stated that the more that one does good the freer they become. Because we are free we can choose good or evil. If we choose evil we actually become less free. Evil enslaves a person. The goal of each person should be to use their freedom to become the best they can be. If being good leads to freedom, then becoming holy is becoming truly free.
What is the practical import of freedom as it is practiced in America? On the one hand we recognize that not everyone holds to the same beliefs in religion, politics, art, and culture. We strive to be respectful of others’ differences by an attitude of “live and let live.” Sometimes when those differences seem to challenge or subvert the majority laws are enacted that prevent the exercise of freedom in that area. For instance, we have laws prohibiting prostitution, child pornography, and gay marriage. In this country we have generally agreed upon norms of behavior and human activity. When someone or some group wants to practice their way of life apart from that norm we ask whether that will endanger others, violate other deeply held principles, or be allowed as just another way of doing things.
Catholicism can generally exist in any culture and under any form of government as long as that government allows us to worship. In America, Catholics should strive to take the faith that we have been given and live it daily. We should by our example and our influence convince others that certain behaviors should not be done because they are sinful or harmful to the human spirit. For instance, while it may not be possible to end abortion by law we can effectively end this by convincing everyone of the sacredness of life. The challenge for Catholics is actually doing that.
Catholic men and women now are in Congress and statehouses, run labor unions, are business owners, and serve in the military. Our influence should be felt by those around us. But is it? Does it matter that 20% of the population is Catholic? Do Catholics strive to help others use their freedom in good and holy ways or are we just like everyone else? That is the question.
America is a beacon of freedom for the world to see. Yet when our freedom is misused by greed and selfishness we don’t stand as an example for others to follow, but one that others mock and deride. May we as Catholics stand as a guiding light for those around us who do not share our faith and let America be a beacon of true freedom for all the world to see.

LIBERTAD Y SANTIDAD

Estimados amigos,
A pesar de que todavía no tenemos las cifras finales del festival de la parroquia, parecer ser que este año hemos sobrepasado los $40,000.00. Gracias, una vez más, a aquellos que asistieron y a aquellos que voluntariamente cedieron su tiempo y talento para hacer del festival un éxito.
Estamos en medio de la campaña la Llamada Católica. Nuestra obligación este año es cerca de $176,00.00. Hasta el momento hemos colectado $60,000. Pido a cada familia que se unan a mí en este compromiso. Si ustedes así lo hacen, podremos cubrir nuestra obligación.
Les recuerdo que tenemos el Vía Crucis cada viernes a las 6:30 de la tarde. Se reza en inglés dentro de la iglesia y en español fuera de la iglesia en las Estaciones de la Cruz.
Como Americanos nos enorgullecemos del valor de la libertad. Sabemos que lo que hace los Estados Unidos de América único entre las naciones es la habilidad de ser libres y sin embargo permanecer unidos como un sólo pueblo. Permitimos la diversidad de opiniones en materias como la cultura, la religión y en cómo conseguir nuestras metas en la vida. Pero, nos amparamos al principio de que la libertad debe ser reservada al bien común.
Nuestro creer en la Iglesia es que toda libertad humana proviene de Dios. Dios nos creó como criaturas libres, que podemos usar nuestro albedrío para controlar nuestro destino y compartir en el trabajo de la creación. Con nuestra libertad podemos alcanzar la justicia; y cuando está orientada hacia el bien es la óptima meta humana.
La Iglesia ha señalado que mientras más uno hace el bien, más libres nos hacemos. Porque somos libres podemos escoger entre el bien y el mal. Si escogemos el mal, en realidad, nos convertimos en menos libres. La maldad esclaviza a la persona. La meta de cada persona debe ser el usar su libertad para llegar a ser lo mejor que pueda ser. Si el ser buenos nos conduce a la libertad, entonces, el conseguir la santificación nos conduce a ser verdaderamente libres.
¿Cuál es la importancia práctica de la libertad como es practicada en los Estados Unidos de América? Por un lado reconocemos que no todo el mundo tiene las mismas creencias religiosas o políticas, o arte y cultura. Nos esforzamos en ser respetuosos con las diferencias de los otros con el dicho de “vivir y dejar vivir”. A veces, cuando esas diferencias parecen competir o perturbar, la mayoría de las leyes han sido decretadas para impedir el ejercicio de la libertad en esa área. Por ejemplo, tenemos leyes prohibiendo la prostitución, la pornografía infantil y los matrimonios homosexuales. En esta nación hemos estado generalmente de acuerdo sobre normas de comportamiento y actividad humana. Cuando algún individuo o grupo desea practicar su propia forma de vida, fuera de las normas establecidas, nos preguntamos si esto pone en peligro a otros, si viola profundamente otros principios, o si debe ser permitido simplemente como otra forma de hacer las cosas.
El catolicismo generalmente puede existir en cualquier cultura y bajo cualquier forma de gobierno siempre y cuando ese gobierno nos permita el culto. En los Estados Unidos de América, los católicos deben esforzarse en tomar la fe que nos ha sido dada y vivirla diariamente. Debemos con nuestro ejemplo y nuestra influencia convencer a otros de que ciertos comportamientos no deben ser permitidos porque son pecaminosos o dañinos al espíritu humano. Por ejemplo, mientras que por ley, puede que no sea posible terminar el aborto, podemos efectivamente terminarlo, convenciendo a todos de la santidad de la vida. El reto para los católicos es hacer esto.
Tenemos hombres y mujeres católicos en el Congreso y el Senado. Otros dirigen uniones de empleados (gremios), son dueños de negocios y/o sirven en las Fuerzas Armadas. Nuestra influencia debe ser sentida por aquellos alrededor nuestro. ¿Pero, es así? ¿Es importante que el 20% de la población es Católica? ¿Se esfuerzan los católicos en ayudar a otros a usar su libertad de manera buena y santa o simplemente somos igual que los demás? Esa es la pregunta.
Los Estados Unidos de América es un faro de libertad para que el mundo vea. Sin embargo, cuando nuestra libertad es mal usada por la codicia y el egoísmo, no nos colocamos como un ejemplo a seguir por los demás, sino uno del cual los otros se burlan y ridiculizan. Que nosotros, como católicos, nos mantengamos como la luz a seguir por aquellos alrededor de nosotros que no comparten nuestra fe, y que permitamos a esta nación ser el faro de verdadera libertad para ser visto por el resto del mundo.
