Dear Friends,
The goal of the Christian life is to do the will of God by following the path set out by Christ. Many years ago I felt the call of God to be His priest. I wanted to serve Him and His people. I have learned through the years that when you say yes to God He will often take you to places you never imagined. He often will invite you into experiences that you didn’t think you could handle. Yet, often it is in the challenging situations and in the encounters with people that you truly discover the face of God.
Part of my ministry over the past twenty-three years of my life has been as a Reserve Chaplain in the US Air Force. I have enjoyed sharing and listening to the stories of the men and women in uniform. I remember vividly when the troops returned after the first Gulf War and how much fun it was to listen to their stories. I remember even more vividly the times that I have escorted an officer to a home to make a death notification. The ministry of Christ’s consolation and peace is so critical at those times. I know that my Air Force ministry has enhanced my ability to serve in the parish. I know too that I am a better chaplain because of serving you and all the many others who have touched my life in the seven assignments I have had in the Diocese of Orlando.
Well, the Air Force is calling me onto active duty and deployment to the Middle East this summer.
The deployment is not to Iraq or Afghanistan, but it is in support of those missions. I am expected to leave in May and return the beginning of September. When I know my mailing address and email I will have it listed in the bulletin.
As of this writing I do not know if the bishop will be sending our parish a priest who will be assisting when I am away. I know that Fr. Franklin and Fr. Longin will do a great job of taking care of your needs in my absence.
The Nature Conservancy, a group that I support, is initiating a campaign to plant 1 billion trees. As you know, trees use carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. The Conservancy believes that if we begin restoring forests that it may be able to dramatically reverse the rise in carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. It sounds right to me. There are many things that we can do to be good stewards of our natural resources.
With the recent rain we can forget that water is a precious resource in this state. It is important that we be careful in how we use fresh water. Many people now see that we cannot dump pollution into lakes, the ocean, landfills, and into the air without paying a price at some point into the future. Waste is a natural part of living. What we do with that waste and how well we can treat it so that it doesn’t cause us harm has become an important part of our lives today.
One way that we can be good stewards of this earth is what and how we consume things. The more that we are able to reduce the amount of waste, the easier it becomes to live healthy lives. If we choose to repair something rather than throw it away where it ends up in a landfill for a hundred years we are being good stewards. If we use those products that can be recycled we are able to have an abundance of goods for ourselves and for our posterity. USE OUR RECYCLING BINS!!
Being a steward is truly being Catholic. It reminds us not that God is miserly, but that He trusts us to cooperate with Him to provide for our children a healthy and prosperous future. Look for ways to reduce waste, to recycle, and repair the products that you own. Don’t waste food or water. Plant a tree or support the Nature Conservancy. There are many ways that we can respond to the will of God. May we do so boldly.

El Hacer la Voluntad de Dios a Menudo es un Reto

Estimados amigos,
La meta de una vida cristiana es el hacer la voluntad de Dios siguiendo el camino que nos enseñó Cristo. Hace muchos años yo sentí el llamado de Dios para ser Su sacerdote. Yo quise servirle a Él y a Su pueblo. A través de los años he aprendido que cuando se contesta que sí a Dios a menudo Él nos lleva a lugares que jamás hubiéramos imaginado. Él frecuentemente nos invita hacia experiencias que nunca pensamos podríamos manejar. Sin embargo, muchas veces es durante las situaciones difíciles y en los encuentros con la gente que verdaderamente descubrimos el rostro de Dios.
Por los últimos veintitrés años de mi vida parte de mi ministerio ha sido ser Capellán de la Reserva de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos de América. He disfrutado compartir y escuchar las historias de los hombres y mujeres en uniforme. Recuerdo vivamente cuando las tropas regresaron a casa después de la primera Guerra del Golfo y cuan divertido fue escuchar sus historias. Recuerdo aún más vivamente los momentos en que acompañé a un oficial a un hogar para notificar una muerte. El ministerio de la consolación y la paz de Cristo es bien crucial en esos momentos. Sé que mi ministerio con la Fuerza Aérea ha enriquecido mi habilidad para servir en la parroquia. También sé, que soy un mejor capellán por haberles servido a ustedes y a los muchos otros que han tocado mi vida en las siete asignaciones que he tenido en la Diócesis de Orlando.
Bien, la Fuerza Aérea me llama al servicio activo y al despliegue al Medio Oriente este verano. El despliegue no es a Irak o Afganistán, pero sí es en apoyo a esas misiones. Espero irme en mayo y regresar a principios de septiembre. Cuando tenga mi dirección postal y mi correo electrónico se los haré saber en el boletín.
Al momento de este escrito no sé si el Obispo le enviará a nuestra parroquia un sacerdote para que ayude mientras yo estoy lejos. Sé que el Padre Franklin y el Padre Longin harán un magnifico trabajo haciéndose cargo de ustedes en mi ausencia.
El “Nature Conservancy” (Conservación de la Naturaleza), un grupo que yo apoyo, está iniciando la campaña para sembrar mil millones de árboles. Como ustedes saben, los árboles usan dióxido de carbono y emiten oxigeno. La Conservación cree que si comenzamos la reforestación se podría reversar dramáticamente el aumento del dióxido de carbono en nuestra atmósfera. A mí me parece bien. Hay muchas cosas que podemos hacer para ser mejores administradores de nuestros recursos naturales.
Con las recientes lluvias podemos olvidar que el agua es un valioso recurso en este Estado. Es importante que seamos cuidadosos en el uso del agua dulce. Mucha gente comprende ahora que no pueden depositar contaminación en los lagos, océanos, terrenos y ni en el aire sin que tengamos que pagar el precio en algún momento en el futuro. La basura es una parte natural de la vida. Lo que hacemos con esa basura y cómo la tratamos para que no nos cause daño ha venido a ser una parte importante en nuestras vidas hoy día.
Una manera en la que podemos ser buenos administradores de esta tierra es en qué consumimos y cómo lo consumimos. Mientras más reducimos nuestra cantidad de basura, más fácil se nos hace vivir una vida saludable. Si escogemos reparar algo en vez de votarlo para que pare en algún terreno por cientos de años estamos siendo buenos administradores. Si usamos aquellos productos que han sido reciclados tendremos productos en abundancia para nosotros y para nuestra posteridad.
Ser protector es realmente ser Católico. Nos recuerda que Dios no es mezquino sino que Él confía en nuestra cooperación para proveer a nuestros niños un futuro saludable y próspero. Busquen las maneras de reducir la basura, de reciclar y de reparar los productos que poseen. No desperdicien el agua ni la comida. Siembren un árbol o apoyen el “Nature Conservancy”. Hay muchas maneras en las que podemos responder a la voluntad de Dios. Hagámoslo valerosamente.
