Library/Media Center...

Librarian:

Welcome to our Library/Media Center!

Our school library/media center is located in the administration building. We have a collection of approximately 8,500 items including books, A-V materials, computer software and equipment. Five Computer workstations are available for student use and one for parent access as well.

Our programs are designed to enhance the work of the classroom. The materials are curriculum-oriented and include resources used by all grades, where Library skills are taught or reinforced at each level.

For the youngest children we primarily use Story-time to follow a series of themes. Spiritual models and stories complement these themes and support faith teachings.

Thru grade 5 the children continue to learn library skills with increased emphasis on research at each grade level. We focus on non-fiction books and illustration in literature. These Library programs are designed to reinforce the use of text features and text structures, which are introduced in the classroom.

Middle School students have lessons as needed to complete research projects—learning how to narrow down a topic, choosing appropriate resources and citing them, with emphasis placed on verifying the information found on the Web. The Language Arts teacher initiates these projects and requires these skills.

The Library also serves as the “Kids Newsroom.” Our student reporters use our cameras as well as our scanners and publishing software. Literature enrichment is included throughout the year. We have contests for all age levels in which the students guess book titles and authors from clues given.

There is a Professional section provided as a resource for the teachers and includes titles for parents. Both parents and parishioners volunteer their time in our Library.

Ours is a comprehensive program conducted in concert with teachers and their curriculum to give our students at Holy Redeemer School the best possible introduction and perfection of the skills they will use in every aspect of their future.
